August 2014 page 14a Introduction: Time Question: In the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2014, it states "a unit of time is attained when the mid-point is passed" (CPTPro 2014, page xv). Does this apply to selecting the level of Evaluation and Management (E/M) services when counseling and coordination of care dominate the encounter, and time is considered the key factor? Answer: Yes. If counseling and/or coordination of care dominate the visit, then the appropriate E/M code may be selected based on time and the unit of time is attained when the mid-point is passed.
