Summer 1991 page 13 Coding Clarification Observation Area of a Hospital The observation area of a hospital allows the physician to retain a patient for the time necessary for the patient's condition to clarify itself by resolving or evolving. Observation is often needed while the effects of initial treatment are being evaluated or to evaluate patients with questionable diagnoses (e.g., abdominal or chest pain of questionable etiology who do not meet acute care admission criteria). The outpatient codes (90000-90080) should be used to report the evaluative services rendered by the physician for the patient in the observation area...
