November 2000 pages 3-4 Coding Communication Reporting Diaphragm Resection Prior to January 1, 2000, CPT did no contain specific codes that accurately described resection of the diaphragm, followed by either simple or complex repair. The existing codes in the diaphragm subsection of the cardiovascular surgery section of CPT described such procedures as repair of a diaphragm laceration (39501), transthoracic repair of a traumatic acute diaphragmatic hernia (39540), and imbrication of the diaphragm for eventration (39545).
