December 2012 pages 3-5 Thyroidectomy and Parathyroidectomy Anatomically, the thyroid gland, located in the anterior part of the neck overlying the cricothyroid membrane and thyroid cartilage, is comprised of two halves (lobes) with a butterfly-shape connected by a narrow band of tissue called the isthmus.
