February 1996 pages 1-2 VBAC Codes Added for 1996 Before 1996 and the development of six new CPT codes, Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section (VBAC), could only be documented by using the vaginal delivery codes along with the appropriate ICD-9-CM code for previous cesarean delivery (654.2X). The prolonged services code(s) (99356, 99357) could have been reported with the appropriate vaginal delivery code (59400, 59409, or 59410), if the risk of uterine rupture and consequent fetal and maternal distress was such that a physician's presence was documented as required, or if hospital regulations required a physician's presence during labor...
